Cerezas & granizo

导致了孩子们如雪崩般涌向这里;

那种冰冻樱桃固有的复仇味道;

Cherries and Hail

Everything happened in the first week of March
when at last the cherries fell.

And they did not fall because they were ripe, round, rotund,
but because of the hail and its inexplicable ire.

After the storm, on the compact whiteness of the park
minimal spots of purple colour

began to sprout, here and there,
like the wedding dress of a stabbed bride.

The tough February prohibition and the excessive greed
among the high branches were the cause of the avalanche of children

who did not mind cutting their lips with the glass snow
so long as they could burst the peel between their teeth.

When, many years from now, someone asks them
about the definitive flavour that brings back their childhood

they will not hesitate to say the flavour of those cherries,
the flavour of vengeance those frozen cherries had,

and they will immediately add that everything happened
in the first week of March long ago, after a storm,

when the hail of the park was slowly stained with red,
and afterwards their breath, and the tips of their fingers,

and also their memory, bleeding, recalling all of that.

Cerezas & granizo

empezaron a brotar, aquí y allá,

Christina’s World / Andrew Wyeth

It is little that we know about you: that your province comes down to a wooden house and a granary situated on the top of a hill, that in summers it is your custom to contemplate three distant birds, leaning with your arms on the ground like a temple whose columns had twisted at the extremes, that there, between the stalks of wheat, you are visited not by angels but by hundreds of grasshoppers, that you have polio and your name is Christina.

If these facts seem sufficient, then why for so many years have we mistakenly believed that the day you allow us to see the color of your eyes we would reveal your mystery, instead of thinking that the rare things you watch intently lifting your head like a roe deer on the hill, are more than enough for you to live on.

El mundo de Cristina. Andrew Wyeth

He has published eight books of poetry, two books of short stories, and a biography of Goya. He has also compiledan anthology of young Latin American poets (Diez de ultramar – Ten from Overseas), one of contemporary Colombian poetry (Antología de la poesía colombiana contemporánea – Anthology of Contemporary Colombian Poetry), and, most recently, an anthology of poems about Bogotá titled En esta parte del mundo. 1916–2022 (In This Part of the World). All of his poetic work has been gathered in Temporal (Temporary, 2022). The Spanish poet Luis García Montero said of Private Collection, one of Cote’s best-known works: “It is inevitable that a poet writes about himself or about poetry when writing about anything. But it is clear that in this case painting is not an anecdotal excuse but the essential subject matter of the poems... The individual vision, the need to choose, more than a negation of the whole, appears as an operation of recognition of the whole.” His poems have been translated into English, Italian, French, Arabic, Chinese, and Bengali, and some have been included in renowned anthologies of Colombian and Latin American poetry, such as El turno y la transición (The Turn and the Transition, compiled by Julio Ortega), Cuerpo plural (Plural Body, compiled by Gustavo Guerrero), and The Other Tiger (compiled by Richard Gwyn), among others. He also runs a YouTube channel on painting called La palabra pintada (The Painted Word).
