Para quienes la prefieren de largo aliento contundente exclamativa con sintagmas narrativos que cuenten sin dejar de cantar la atmósfera en un carruaje al galope de sustantivos y verbos
eso es poesía

Para quienes la prefieren breve concreta epigramática aforística contemplativa silente haikucesca grano de arroz germinado en los campos de la metafísica
eso es poesía

La poesía es lo que cada cual necesita de ella
Una ventana para ver el mundo desde el interior de cada uno
por lo tanto
un estilo no puede deslegitimar a otro

No afecta cuál sea la orilla de su resonancia
pero sí la hondura de su repercusión

No importa si la emoción que la provoca es ira tristeza rabia amor dicha
siempre y cuando sea una placa de esa emoción desbordando el alma

Tampoco importa si no te gusta la palabra alma
y menos si este escrito es o no poesía

Repito:
La poesía es lo que cada cual necesita de ella
No interesa la clasificación de géneros literarios
porque se escribe por necesidad de conciliarnos con el mundo
no por encajar en un género

Eso no significa que todo escrito sea un poema
pero sí que cada poema inaugura una forma
y a veces una gramática

¿Un manifiesto?
¿Un poema?
¿Un texto raro sin comas y con ínfulas de los tres anteriores?

For those who prefer it brief concrete epigrammatic aphoristic contemplative silent haiku-like a grain of rice sprouting in the fields of metaphysics
that is poetry

Poetry is what each person needs from it
A window to see the world from within each person
therefore
one style cannot invalidate another

It does not matter which shore of resonance it comes from
but the depth of its repercussion matters

It does not matter if the emotion that provokes it is anger sadness rage love joy
as long as a tectonic plate of that emotion overflows from the soul

Nor does it matter if you do not like the word soul
and even less if this writing is or is not poetry

would say it is not because there are too many adjectives

I repeat:
Poetry is what each person needs from it
The classification of literary genres is irrelevant
because writing comes from the need to reconcile ourselves with the world
not from the need to fit into a genre

That does not mean every piece of writing is a poem
but that every poem inaugurates a form
and sometimes a grammar

A poem?
A strange text without commas and with the pretensions of all three above?

LA LUZ DE LA VIDA DETENIDA (EFECTOS SECUNDARIOS)

No tengo ambiciones ni deseos
Ser poeta no es una ambición mía
Es mi manera de estar solo

No se escribe poesía con el afán de ser mejor poeta
sino con el llamado a apreciar más la vida
Apreciar exige contemplación
La poesía implica contemplar
Poesía es también la luz de la vida detenida

Contemplar:
Darle más lugar al ser que al hacer
La única manera de hospedar el tiempo

Degustar el instante
no atragantarse de momentos
Permitir que lo poético habite en uno
Ser su leal instrumento

Pisar una hoja seca
e imaginar el árbol
no importa si se convierte o no en poema

Paradójicamente
cuando se entra en estado de contemplación poética
cuando se escribe para apreciar más la vida
hay depuración de técnica o descubrimiento de una nueva
y se es mejor poeta
aunque esto último
sea solo un efecto secundario.




THE LIGHT OF SUSPENDED LIFE (SIDE EFFECTS)

Don’t write poetry aiming to become a better poet
but to appreciate life more
Appreciation demands contemplation
Poetry implies contemplation
Poetry is also the light of suspended life

Contemplate:
Give more space to being than to doing
The only way to give shelter to time

Savor the instant
Don’t choke on moments
Allow the poetic to dwell within
Be its loyal instrument

Step on a dry leaf
and imagine the tree
no matter if it becomes a poem or not

Paradoxically
when one enters a state of poetic contemplation
when one writes to appreciate life more
there is a refinement of technique or the discovery of a new one
and one becomes a better poet
although the latter
is only a side effect.

POEMA POR EL QUE UN AMIGO ME VA A DEJAR DE HABLAR

Un amigo dice —como muchos otros—
que la poesía le salvó la vida
Me cuesta creer que la poesía no tenga asuntos más importantes
que andar por ahí de vaga
haciendo casting de desocupados
a ver a cuál decide salvar

La poesía se me parece más a un mar para hundirse
y no a un salvavidas para mantenerse en la superficie

Aquel amigo insiste en que la poesía le salvó la vida
Yo le digo que él no debería presumir esas cosas
Si la poesía se entera
es capaz de rectificar el error.




POEM FOR WHICH A FRIEND WILL STOP TALKING TO ME

A friend says—as many others do—
that poetry saved his life
I find it hard to believe that poetry has nothing more important to do
than wander around aimlessly
holding auditions for the unoccupied
to see which one it decides to save

Poetry seems to me more like a sea to sink into
than a life preserver to stay afloat

That friend insists that poetry saved his life
I tell him he should not boast about such things
If poetry finds out
it is capable of correcting the mistake.

E imploramos a la ausencia que damos
A esa parte de nosotros
que sin necesidad de existir

Quizá lo que nos falta sea crear a Dios
Es decir:
Crear a alguien que no seas tú
para que te acoja dentro de ti
porque estás solo
la jornada abruma
lo real no basta
porque el mito es fuente primigenia de creación
y a veces pesa tanto el mundo
que hace bien el mito de que algo en un cuartito sagrado dentro de nosotros mismos
como el apéndice científicamente inútil de una vejiga natatoria
conserva al hombre en tierra
durante los días de diluvio.




THE ABSENCE WE GIVE

To the absence we give
we call it “God”

"God take care of you" means:
I hope someone other than me takes care of you

"God protect you":
I hope someone other than me protects you

"Go with God":
I want you to go with someone other than me

"God pay you":
I hope someone other than me pays you

"God, help me":
I want someone other than myself to help me

"My God":
I want to embrace someone greater than myself

And we implore the absence we give
To that part of us that
without needing to exist
embraces us

God is as great as what we lack

Perhaps what we lack is creating God
That is to say:
Creating someone other than yourself
to embrace you within yourself
because you are alone
the day overwhelms
reality is not enough
because myth is the primordial source of creation
and sometimes the world weighs so heavily
that we are comforted by the myth that something in a small sacred room inside ourselves
like the scientifically useless appendix of a swimming bladder
keeps man on earth
during the days of the flood.

Su trabajo en poesía, novela y cuento ha sido merecedor de múltiples reconocimientos como el Premio Internacional de Poesía Pilar Fernández Labrador (España, 2025) y el Premio Iberoamericano de Poesía José Santos Chocano (Perú, 2023), entre otros. Ha sido invitado a encuentros literarios en diferentes países de América y Europa. Es músico de Grave Compañía, profesor universitario, director de la Fundación Trilce y del espacio cultural Trilce en la Luis Ángel, Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango, en Bogotá.


Alejandro Cortés González. Author of nine poetry books, two novels, and one short story collection, published from 2010 to the present. His work in poetry, novels, and short stories has received multiple recognitions, including the International Poetry Prize Pilar Fernández Labrador (Spain, 2025) and the Ibero-American Poetry Prize José Santos Chocano (Peru, 2023), among others. He has been invited to literary events in different countries across the Americas and Europe. He is a musician with Grave Compañía, a university professor, director of the Trilce Foundation, and director of the Trilce cultural space at the Luis Ángel Arango Library in Bogotá.
